Angel Billabong and Broken beach ( Sunset )
Broken Bay was the image I saw when I googled "Nusa Penida" and responsible for us visiting the island. It is even prettier in person. Angels Billabong, a natural infinity pool, was a short hike past Broken Bay. It is a toss-up which is more ...beautiful.
Kelingking / Navagio beach Nusa Penida Bali
Arguably the most photogenic spot we visited on our entire Bali trip, Kelingking beachis one of those viewpoints that it’s real when you see it for the first time. This entire coastal area
is particularly beautiful - the white cliffs contrast dramatically with the turquoise blue waters.
We continued onto Kelingking Beach. I was shocked to get to the lookout and see what a near mirror image of the world famous Navagio/Shipwreck Beach of Zakynthos, Greece except without a single tourist in sight...or the shipwreck. Unlike my trip to Navagio earlier this year, I didn't break a toe. I still don't understand how Navagio is world famous and I'd never heard of Kelingking. I feel privileged to be in on the secret of Nusa Penida.
GIRI PUTRI TEMPLE
Pura Goa Giri Putri is a sacred temple in a cave; many Balinese Hindus make pilgrimages to Nusa Penida to visit it. A priest had to purify us by sprinkling holy water on our heads before we could enter. We shimmied down a narrow rock tunnel and then crawled through an opening. After all that we were surprised to enter a vast space. We paused to take in the cave's energy and watch the group in front of us present their offerings and pray in the first chamber. One man wrapped his arms around the statue and cried loudly...it was impossible to tell if we were witnessing tears of joy or devastation. We meditated in the second chamber and then moved to the last one where we were blessed by a priest. Instead of receiving bread and/or wine, we had bracelets tied onto our wrist, rice pasted onto our forehead, flowers tucked behind our ears and dark powder spread between our eyebrows. The exit was lined with beautiful umbrellas which guard the temple.
Atuh Great Beach Trips
Probably one of the most beautiful beaches in the area tucked away in a quiet backwater, Atuh beach can only be described as breathtaking. Amazing coral and regular sightings of Giant mantas and turtles make this a truly unique place to visit.
The best part about going to Nusa Penida on a whim as we had no idea what to expect. We set out for Atuh Beach early in the morning. We were stunned by the dramatic cliffs, cyan blue water and tree house built to take in the views. Having all of this to ourselves + the tree house made for one of the very best days of the trip - I LOVE tree houses.
The most spectacular vistas on Nusa Penida are perhaps to
be admired at Banah Point, on the southwest coast.
At Banah Point one regularly observes quite a number of
bird of prey, such as the Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus)
and the majestic White-bellied Fish-eagle. With this spectacular
views of the ocean, the waves down below breaking against
the rocks, you might just get chance of seeing one of these
raptors up close, since they tend to soar alongside the cliff
virtually at eye level.
